In the fall of 1975, Wayne Gordon began teaching and coaching at Farragut High School on Chicago’s Westside. At that time, Wayne moved into an apartment in the Lawndale Community and began a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Bible Study. From this core group of high school students, Wayne and Anne Gordon, along with a mother of several of the boys, the idea of starting a church was first conceived. With a meeting of fifteen people in March of 1978, Lawndale Community Church moved from a dream to a reality.
Lawndale Community Church is a nondenominational Christian Church that seeks to provide a place to worship Jesus Christ. We place importance on a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ and growth in Him through the study of God’s Word – the Bible. The church is to be a witness of Christ’s Gospel by meeting both the spiritual and physical needs of the community through involvement in people’s lives.
From the beginning Lawndale Community Church has held to these individual purposes:
1. To reach the unchurched people of the community
2. To proclaim and live out Biblical Christianity.
3. To raise up new generations of Christian leadership.
4. To creatively meet the needs of people while striving to empower them along the way.
The church has adopted Matthew 22:34-39 as its purpose verse and has adopted the theme of “LOVING GOD AND LOVING PEOPLE.”
SHEPHERDING THE PEOPLE OF LCC
The purpose of the Shepherding ministry is to disciple and nurture people in the Christian faith. This is done through the Sunday morning Worship Service, Bible studies, small groups, Christian counseling and Christian service.
OUTREACH INTO COMMUNITY
MISSION OF LCC OUTREACH MINISTRY
LCC’s mission is to redeem the “Lawndale Community”. We seek to bring Christian, wholistic revitalization to the lives and environment of its residents through economic empowerment, housing improvement educational enrichment, quality affordable health care, and Christian discipleship.
VISION OF LCC OUTREACH MINISTRY
LCC envisions a future when Christian values undergird the attitudes and actions of Lawndale residents; when existing community people are empowered to live in harmony and security; when vacant lots and abandoned buildings are converted into new, affordable homes and rehabbed apartments; when the majority of homes are owner occupied; when high school and college graduation are accepted expectations; when job skills and employment opportunities abound; when all people have quality affordable health care; and where JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!
